Friends helping friends, the new reality

Hey Birdie, Sebastian, want something to add to your lists of insanities?

You can't even watch the neighbours' kids (for free) without being called an unlicensed daycare.

I saw this yesterday and had the same reaction to it. It is, indeed, stupid, and it is also an infringement of government upon the rights of parents to direct the upbringing of their own children.

It doesn't really make sense on any level. I think about the folks who are my close friends. They have been incredible blessings and have certainly watched my kids more than 28 days in the year, even if it was just letting my kids hang out at their houses for hours at a time.

It doesn't even pass the rhetoric of the typical paternalist. What happened to "It takes a village?" Evidently, that means that every village has to have a licensed and inspected day care center. So much for loving friends and vigilant aunties.
